I can speak to this.  In 2003 I was able to hack around audible's
protections with some code I wrote.  However, since that time, they
have redone the scheme and watermarking.  That was almost 5 years ago.
 There might still be a trick to use wine, patch the exe to use the
old protection wrapper when downloding the files from audible servers,
then unpack the data to wave form, all under linux.  Its a pain in the
ass, and why I don't use them any longer.  Now if I want an audiobook
I just buy it on cd.  I am currently reading Tolstoy's War and Peace
on my daily one hour bike rides after work.  I should be done with the
novel in about two months :-). Anna Pavlovna is intriguing...
