I had already been doing the "Neighborhood view" thing but that didn't
give me any clues as to the XO's mac address.

What I DID discover  is that /sbin is NOT in PATH.

so: although 
ifconfig
is a command that doesn't work

/sbin/ifconfig 

does work.
