I am going to wait to see what some of the more experienced users here like
Rick Moen or Daniel Gimpelevich might say, as they will surely have the
correct answer, but I am going to hazard a guess and say that you need to
create a new file system on the external drive.  However, that seems
extreme, and so I am going to wait to see what others say.
