In Ubuntu, it is a mere two commands (installation/set as default).
For the browser plugin, so browse to any site that requires Java, and
Ubufox will present you with an installation option for Sun Java
plugin...

Ubuntu supports soft modems using the restricted-manager to enable
them...most modems will work

I truly disagree having used both. Freespire does not give you the
same power. It may be setup fairly nicely, but then you are locked
in. If you want to change to Gnome, KDE, XFCE -- you will probably
break a lot of things :-)
