This might well n be a known problem with a known solution for this
particular model of ThinkPad[1] -- except Alex has never been able to
determine and tell us what model of ThinkPad this is, so we're unable to
use that path of investigation for him.
[1] For example, my antique Sony VAIO PCG-505FX's CD drive has a weird
ATA interface that requires special boot-ime options for Linux to boot
it.
