I hear you, but Id like to modify your last statement:
There is a (small?) price to pay for freedom -- and it begins with a little
knowledge and a lot of time.
Don't get me wrong I, too have a PC hooked up to my main TV which does all
sorts of nifty things, but next to it and in parallel, I have the trusted
comcast DVR, that while is no Tivo, never fails, and when it does the
Comcast tech is there the next day to replace it.
Also, my understanding is that recent PC based DVRs don't do well with HDTV

Yes, of course. But do you have freedom with Tivo?

No. Freedom to transfer the recorded content? No. Freedom from
monthly/yearly subscriber costs? No. Freedom from DRM? No. Freedom to
tinker? No.
There is a small price to pay for freedom -- and it begins with a little
knowledge :-)
