I don't have that information in front of me.  Unfortunately, do to my
compressed time schedule, I am going to have to just give it a shot.  I will
be getting help installing it from Daniel Gimpelevich, who is pretty good at
getting it to work, and so I am optimistic.

But I am fairly confident with Ubuntu.  One of the reasons that people like
Ubuntu is because of the driver support.  And since this is an older
notebook, I am betting that we will succeed, and that most of the driver
issues have been resolved.

In any case, given you have enough RAM, you should be able to test this

And the newbie is not going to be present for the install, as he would kind
of rather not come up to speed on that aspect of using the machine.  He is
willing to learn other stuff, but for right now, he is asking that he be
able to dodge that specific task.
