Yes, absolutely. I am an attorney, and I don't have a car, and I would
never own a car here. The cost of insurance alone usually equals the amount
you could spend on a rental car or one of the many car-by-the-hour services
such as flexcar or zip car or the city car share program.
I live near the school that this community is supporting with FOSS. I had
rented a car one day. I left my notebook briefcase (without the notebook)
in the car for no more than 15 minutes. When I came back, the car had been
broken into, and the notebook stolen. Fortunately, the most tragic loss
there was limited to a wifi card. But as it turns out, I had not been able
to use that notebook again with wifi for more than one year, until Jason
Turner of this list helped me hack a netgear card at Javacat about 3 weeks
ago.
Also, if you travel by bus, your blood pressure will be lower, and you will
meet some funny and crazy people on the bus.
If you need a ride in a hurry, cabs are reasonably abundant, except on
Saturday night and Halloween night. Heh.
Sorry about your loss!
