For comparison, what if you save it in OOo format?  Does it load faster?

Also, how long does it take to save the file if you open it in Excel 
format and save it in Excel format (not including the time it took to load 
it)?

Lame questions, but here they are: Are you using the latest verison of 
OOo?  And have you filed a bug (pref. with the file attached) against OOo 
for taking so long?

I'm glad you're working with them and value freedom.  I'm glad you have 
the patience to ask this list, and I hope we can all get through this.
