I think places like Office De[s]pot offer computer-printable labels 
that adhere to CD or DVD media.  That's the easiest way, if you want to
avoid the handwritten-with-a-Sharpie look.

I'd suggest:

      Ubuntu Linux v. 6.06
     "Dapper Drake" for i386
  Desktop disk (installable live CD)
  Courtesy of SF-LUG, www.sf-lug.org.

(You might want to burn 3/4 of them from the i386 image, and 1/4 
from the x86_64 aka "AMD64" ISO.)

Bummer.  I don't really have enough information from the above to know
exactly what's going on, but I'm guessing that, for some reason, the
booting installed kernel is unable to find and mount the root
filesystem.  Which may mean that the system _itself_ is fine, and all
you need is to refresh the bootloader using a maintenance CD.
