I was interested to find a blurb about the newest version of Ubuntu
in, of all places, the SF Examiner. I picked it up in a coffee shop,
and there it was:
http://www.examiner.com/a-124036~New_Version_of_Ubuntu_Software_Coming.html
It only had the first two paragraphs in print. The interesting thing
is that the article was considered newsworthy at all for a tabloid --
even two paragraphs is valuable space that could be a paying
advertiser. Canonical's use of the Nelson Mandela connection is
likely what got them those two paragraphs, and that's quite a smart PR
move on their part.
Skillful use of PR is such a unusual thing to see in this industry,
even among large companies with lots of money, so it's even more
remarkable and nifty to see it in a smaller, less flush organization.
