[dvlug] dvlug list

Grant,
Long time no hear! Hope you're doing well.
Not sure if you caught it, but not too long ago a couple folk were
trying to find out
if DVLUG is still meeting, how to contact, one of 'em was also interested in
possible different meeting schedule (due to schedule conflict(s)).
Seems folks were having challenges finding current active responsive
contact(s) for the group and/or information about recent (if any)
activity with DVLUG ... but I digress (see also
dvlug at linuxmafia.com
list and semi-recent archives thereof).
Uhm, DVLUG list(s).
I've yet to see evidence that list at dvlug.org is (at least
persistently) functional.
Is it operating again? Are the archives available?
Is that list membership and the archives being backed up?
Do the archives have all the history of that list (or even most of it)?
If that "newer" list is to replace the older, will the newer import all the
older archives?
I see nothing on
https://www.dvlug.org/email/
about how to access the archives ... don't even see a claim that they exist
(thought I saw that earlier somewhere, but not spotting it at present).
Matter of fact, checking through my emails over last several years, I
don't see anything
from any @dvlug.org email addresses at all, except from you <grant at dvlug.org>
and I see exactly zero emails at all from anything on that purported
list at dvlug.org
list. I've used the web subscribe thingy many times -
never see anything back from it - no errors, no emails, just nothing.
Meantime dvlug at linuxmafia.com list and archives generally quite
consistently work.
Even years back, when stuff about the "new" list went up on DVLUG's
web site, I'm pretty sure there was never any posting to the "old" list saying
that everything was moving to the new list ... or even that just all the
newer traffic and archives were going to the new list and such.
Anyway, I think probably many are looking to see at least reasonably
consistent functionality over a reasonable period of time on the "new"
before jumping ship. Maybe other folks are having different results,
but as for the "new", I've generally seen (next to?) nothing in working
or reasonably persistent functionality there. Sorry.
So, I've often/typically been sending to both - or at least the "old",
at least until I see the "new" working and quite consistently so ...
and I've yet to see that. Maybe it works wonders if one has an
email that ends in @dvlug.org as you do. ;-)
Oh, ... I'll also hang it out there for your consideration, if you may be
interested ... if you may possibly want to have subdomain with
DVLUG list(s) on <whatever>@lists.dvlug.org., I could potentially
host that if you so wanted that ... but maybe ask me again in a
couple weeks or so ... I'm still doing migration off of mailman version 2
(could do mailman 2 in the meantime if you really wanted that),
so still have more testing, etc. to do, and want to wait a bit 'till that's all
done and the dust well settled before I consider that migration to be a
full success (in case I find any latent issues that may not be immediately
apparent). I'd also think Rick might even be willing to do same (notably
subdomain part for list) on the existing linuxmafia.com host. In any case,
food for thought. Could also potentially migrate so all the old (most notably
archives) would still also be present under lists.dvlug.org (similar to how
things are for BALUG under lists.balug.org). Anyway, just a thought,
and thought I'd hang the offer out there if you may be interested (and
would also have the capability to access and back up full archives,
also member subscription list). And, yeah just to think about it
more generally, if you use a subdomain (e.g. lists.dvlug.org)
for list(s), rather than the main domain (dvlug.org), that does leave
things much more flexible for how one may want to handle list(s),
most notably it can be hosted or the like, exceedingly independent
of whatever else may be going on for hosting or whatever on
[www.]dvlug.org (e.g. web site, etc.).
Well, keep us posted. But would be good to see that "new" list
actually working, and having functional findable searchable (e.g.
via Google or other search engines) archives too. Meantime,
I think many may continue to (at least also) use the "old" list,
because ... well, it does actually work.
Oh, and when I started typing up this email, also used the web form
thingy to subscribe another email address I have access to, to that "new"
list ... I still see absolutely no email from the list - no
confirmation, no errors,
absolutely nothing.
Anyway, interesting you say I'm subscribed and my postings make it through,
because I don't receive any of the postings, see no archives of the postings ...
in fact I don't think I've ever seen any of the archives for the "new" list.
So ... maybe some troubleshooting is in order? How are you finding it from
other email domains? And is there a test list that's otherwise similar in
infrastructure and configuration? Should generally have a separate
test list, so as to not annoy folks on "main" list with test posts, but
I've not seen any information about a test list. Anyway, good to
hear that at least you see stuff on the new list ... but if I and/or
most others can't ... yeah, that'd be an issue.
