A question came up the other day about 32 vs. 64 bit computers. To
check you can either cat /proc/cpuinfo or just try booting a 64 bit
image on your eee Intel Atom.  I recommend 64 bit if your hardware can
support it.  This paper by Eric Raymond gives some interesting
background and historical computer industry analysis as well as some
extrapolation. The 2008 deadline seems to have been delayed in this
cycle.
