Harry,
I maintain several CentOS-based servers both at home and for an
Internet software company and the first thing I would suggest is NOT
to use CentOS if you need to use the latest graphics drivers as well
as the latest MySQL and PHP versions. CentOS follows the RedHat
Enterprise update schedule which means that they're very conservative
in what is updated during its life-cycle. The current *supported*
versions for Apache, MySQL and PHP are 2.2.3, 5.0.77 and 5.1.6
respectively. While it's possible to either use third-party packages
or install from source, I believe you're going to cause more problems
then you'll solve by using non-supported versions. If you really need
the latest versions and want to stick to a RedHat-based system, use
Fedora, otherwise stick with the current CentOS packages. You're of
course welcome to join us tonight (Friday) at Cafe La Scala, 1655
North Main Street, Walnut Creek starting at 6PM to discuss :)
