If I could convince Sylvia to do it, I'd move to Urbana, Illinois.
Houses are maybe half the price of Orlando houses, probably 1/6 the
price of California houses. Illinois has obscene property taxes
compared to Florida and California, but you're paying tax on a whole
less assessed value, so it's probably even. I'd assume homeowners
insurance is cheaper because Urbana homes are inexpensive and there are
no earthquakes or hurricanes, and I haven't heard of forest fires
there either. Obviously fresh vegetables and computer parts are more
expensive: Urbana has no strawberry fields and no computer superstores.
Urbana is very flat, making a bicycle very practical. No matter how bad
your knees and how old you are, it's amazing how good you get at
bicycling if you ride regularly. Just start by going around the block 4
times, and move up from there. I'd be surprised if you needed even one
car. Urbana's about 4 miles from Champaign It's home of University of
Illinois (where Marc Andreeson invented Netscape), so there's access to
good medical care. If you have to go to the Big City (tm), Chicago's
about 125 miles north, but traffic and construction.
Yeah, the winters are cold, but they sell heavy jackets, scarves,
earmuffs, gloves, and you can make wrist-socks to keep the wind from
blowing up your coat sleeves. Just take some gym socks, cut a small
hole for your thumb and a long hole for your four fingers, and bang, no
frozen wrists. I spent my first 30 years in Chicago, so I can give you
advice.
The only other advice I could give you is to get out of the USA
completely, because our nation is going down hill fast. I doubt we'll
have Medicare or Social Security very much longer, and it's going to
get very risky to vote or campaign.
