Someone on r/medicine (of course) raised an even more interesting wrinkle: sperm and eggs are not the only reproductive cells. Much like red blood cells go through massive changes in development (via one of my favorite words: erythropoeisis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythropoiesis ), so do sperm and egg cells via spermatogenesis or oogenesis.

Anyhow, while the final human egg is approximately 10,000 times larger than the human sperm, some of the reproductive cells are smaller/larger than the final form.
