[conspire] An actual Linux technical question

Recently I decided to get an inexpensive laptop to take travelling and not be concerned about all the personal data that might be lost or acquired by persons unknown.
On Amazon, I found an ASUS laptop.  With Win 11 it costs about $1200.  Same hardware with Ubuntu cost less than $300.  What's not to like?
I've updated the software several times since.  No surprise that the first time there was a lot to update after the factory install.
A couple times I have gotten a surprising message that the computer needed to be re-started to finish the update.  That is a standard "feature" of Windoz, but I'd never encountered that in all the years I have used Unix and various Linux distros.  What happened?
