I think I'd likewise be inclined to not use USB for main storage.
Given the existing guido (and attached) hardware and situation,
I think I'd be inclined to go the route of NVMe +
NVMe to SATA adapter, and use that to replace the existing
SSDs (one-by-one, of course) in the existing external SSD
eSATA attached enclosures.

Then of course there's the slight bit about isolating and
correcting issue of apparently flakey power connection to
one of the enclosures. If the issue is just a loose-fitting
plug at one end of one of those cables, then simple matter
of replacing the cable. If the culprit is the socket it connects to,
then matter of replacing that - in the easier case one of the power
bricks, in the slightly more challenging, that of USB (for power only)
connector on one of those external enclosures. But I do quite
recall one of them being a highly loose fit - but I don't recall which
end of which cable to which device (enclosure or power brick).

I'd be much more inclined to go with that (and also given the existing),
than to go with USB for main storage.

I'm also thinking next time I'm up for purchasing more "SSD drives",
it's more likely going to be NVMe(s) + NVMe to SATA adapter(s).
And ... maybe I ought get some of those NVMe to SATA adapter(s)
adapters sooner rather than later ... before they become scarce
(though that may not happen for some fair while yet).
