I fall victim to this dysfunction regularly. One reason is that's just
part of my personality: Lazy. Another reason is that if I strongly
guarded against everything that could go wrong, I'd have no time to use
the stuff. This includes my house, my car, and my computer activities.
Of course, I do tend to practice preventative maintenance on everything.
I had an example of getting bitten by this last night. An rsync backup
to local external hard disk looked really twitchy. Matter of fact, it
stalled and I had to Ctrl+C out of it. Ugh!
I came back and did an fsck on the device after unmounting it. It
repaired something. Another backup looked twitchy but finished. I
unmounted and did an fsck -y, which repaired, and then another, which
read good. I did another backup to this disk, and it went well.
Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution I just ordered a
replacement drive, and will use the iffy one for something else.
