If by 'professional development', you mean fluency with the sorts of
Linux tools in vogue with business: It seems to me that enterprise
computing is still overwhelmingly on CentOS (which differs only
trivially from Red Hat Enterprise Linux).

Although such businesses arguably ought to value expertise with *ix
basics and with Linux distribution fundamentals, it's only slightly
cynical to suggest that a rational focus of that kind enjoyed a brief
run in the 1990s, and has been replaced by Bright Shiny Object syndrome,
where job candidates are expected to be fluent with various specialised
tools that are continually changing. (Search Dice.com to see what
hiring managers claim is important this week.)

What I'm suggesting is businesses remain overwhelmingly inclined to
deploy Stuff du Jour on CentOS, with the result that fluency with
CentOS/RHEL is a necessary but not sufficent job qualification. (Since
the 2000s, Linux has been broadly regarded as 'just infrastructure'.)

you -- and also had Mailman send you an 'invitation' mail.
