[conspire] "KVM" on Linux ...

Right. Well it is September. The Millenials might want to read:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

Back to the technical details:
KVM can be installed as a standard Debian package.
And it might work with the .vmdk file.
I like the name. I once had 4 computers connected with
a physical KVM switch because there was now room for 4 monitors.

VB can also be installed with some tweaks to /etc/apt/sources.list
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

I also know that the 2 are not compatible with each other.
To be safe, maybe I need to clone my install to a USB that is rwx not just r-x.
Then I if I trash the USB stick during testing, no big deal.

Can someone suggest a link of how to create that USB? Mostly I have
just found instructions of how to copy an existing iso file.

Which I think you can interpret as showing that the Internet babbles a
lot, has a short attention span, and sometimes needs to be ignored. ;->

That would work. Or, if you have a spare hard drive (that we can call
the 'test drive') for that laptop, swap the present drive out for the
test drive, put your choice of Linux distro on it, install VirtualBox
for Linux on that, and use that to test your Windows 8.1 .vmdk file and
see if it's satisfactory.

Might be nice to try KVM as a fallback option. It appears indeed that
KVM can use the .vmdk files directly (that were invented by VMware, not
Virtualbox). https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/FAQ

(That was just my first hit from Web-searching. I'm sure there are
better resources.)
