[conspire] bootable USB

I downloaded several live .ISO files with the expectation of "test drive" before doing install. I bought several new USB sticks for the purpose.

However, I can't seem to make a thumb drive bootable.

On a Linux machine I did used dd to write to the USB stick.
  dd if=debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-lxde-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdh1 bs=4M ; sync

A listing the directory on the USB drive showed several files and directories. I had not just copied the .iso file.

ls -l Debian\ jessie\ 20150908-21\:50/

However, after rebooting the computer and remembering which key to press to change boot order, the thumb drive was not listed as a choice.

I also tried the utility UNetbootin on a Windoz machine with similar results?

Any suggestions?
