[conspire] Dead key international keyboard leyout NOT WORKING

Hi Folks,
Dead key issues:

I never have had an issue with keyboard layouts, that is, until I installed LinuxMInt 17.3 -Rosa.
Now, I can not type words with accents (´), of the kind ´ + a = á, ~ + n = ñ, etc.
I read some where, that the problem lays with the xinputrc file.
- for /etc/X11/xinit/xinputrc
  I have:
    # im-config(8) generated on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 11:41:39 +0900
run_im default
# im-config signiture: b4adf8baabbc92cf765f58e30f74c5e5  -

- for /home/joe/.xinputrc
  I have:
    # im-config(8) generated on Wed, 13 Apr 2016 20:53:09 -0700
run_im uim
# im-config signiture: 2d2c95d064f0948300f98a33b7c8a0e6  -

Note, the not hiding file is dated: 26 Jun 2010, the hiding one is dated: 13 Apr 2016.
Another difference is: ´run_im¨ default vs uim.
I did change the new 2016 file to default. The problem still persist.
Any one any suggestions or tips?   . .  thanks
