Paul,

The Raspberry Pi has very limited power available on the two USB A port, the micro USB port is one of the alternatives for power input and doesn’t do data. A keyboard and mouse will be about all you can safely power at one time on the USB A ports. A good powered hub capable of supplying 3 or 4 amps at 5 volts is a good investment. It will allow you to hook up power hungry peripherals such as CD or DVD drives or external hard disks or scanners or web-cams.

If you want to go off grid with battery power, there are a couple of options. First would be to power the hub from the battery and have the hub power the Pi and wifi adaptor as well as keyboard and mouse. Another alternative would be to use one USB A port to connect to the Pi from your laptop with a remote desktop program and use the other port for the wifi adaptor.

The first alternative does use up the battery a bit more quickly. The second uses the laptop more and might use up the battery faster that way.
