Good catch, thanks!
I had heard that, but in the spur of the moment misrembered the
institution that moved to Civic Center as being Steinhart Aquarium,
which in fact remains joined at the hip to California Academy of
Sciences in G.G. Park.
One might also mention the Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum near the
Presidio, which has been totally rebuilt and greatly enlarged since I
was last there. European art masterpieces, mostly.
Another delightful outdoor excursion is weast from the Palace of the
Legion of Honor Museum along the north shore of San Francisco, following
the trail that traces where the former road El Camino del Mar was.
The S.F. Roads Commission (or whatever that department's name is)
finally gave up on repairing El Camino del Mar when they finally
realised the road was built across a major vein of serpentine rock,
which is landslide-prone.
The trail extends a couple of klicks through woodlands to Land's End,
the northwest corner of San Francisco where the Cliff House is and the
ruins of Sutro Baths -- themeselves worth visits. (The current
incarnation of Cliff House isn't much, but the Camera Obscura on the
back patio is worth the trip.)
