Thank you for the quick and very thorough reply. I'll give some thought to
the VM set up and I may be onboard with this. I have run Sun's (now
Oracle's) VirtualBox on another machine. The application was running an
older version of one O.S. within a latter version (the idea being a
flat-bed scanner would only work with the older version).

Anyway, I hope to make it out to Menlo Park this Saturday with my netbook.
I will also read in its entirety the points you make regarding Ubuntu. I
have heard some positive things about Mint, so maybe that will work for my
needs.
