Rick is giving a clear example, using lynx, of how to turn html code into
markdown so you know what you're looking at. Ubuntu/Debian types will have
w3m, which is basically the same thing, already installed. All you do is
read the man page and write a simple command. Add the command to either an
alias 'notrust' or as a terminal bound command on a keyboard shortcut,
which will output the actual target link.

Option B is use google fu. If you feel behind the curve just sign up for
the free "Power Searching with Google" class that is available now and will
end with you receiving an actual certificate upon a passing grade. Pretty
cool!

Option C within your graphical browser is to use an add-on called "Web of
Trust" or WoT, which verifies the credibility of websites and links. No
more having to simply trust others if that is not working for you.

Option D is to use the browser add-on iMacro, create an internet related
security method you like, and record it as a macro.

Option E is to install the browser add-on NoScript and sync it across all
your machines. This will block everything on the internet by default until
you unblock it by hand. There is a lot to unblock, but it is a fantastic
tool mentioned on this mailing list many times.

Option F is to learn about sandboxing, which isolates applications from the
system at large. It is capable of doing far more. There are too many
options to even casually mention them by name.

Option G, to take isolation even farther, is to setup a Chroot Jail, which
will isolate an entire filesystem on your machine.

Option H is to learning about key signing using PGP and use it to
authenticate everything you post online. Many people on the list can help
you set this up.

If url shortening is bothering you simple look up scripts that reveal the
actual url being shortened. This is very easy to setup.

I hope this information is helpful in getting you started. Preparation is
everything in protecting yourself online. Good luck.
