I generally have my systems set up with at least 2 disks, 1 is the OS
disk and another is the user disk. That being said I tried to upgrade
from 10.04 to 12.04 and it was a disaster so I just wiped the OS disk
clean and installed 12.04 fresh.

Much as I love Open Source Unixs most Linux distros, FreeBSD also
suffers from this fault, do not have a clean upgrade path from one major
release, Ubuntu 10 for example, to another, Ubunto 12. Solaris and HP/UX
do have a clear upgrade path but even then there are pitfalls.

I absolutely despise Unity, it's dreadful. I will not go into listing
Unity's many faults, you can find many forum posts about this if you are
interested. I ended up switching to Linux Mint and running XFCE4 as my
window manager, YMMV. This is for my desktop. All my servers are Ubuntu
server which, of course, run headless so the issue of Unity does not
come up.

I don't have any experience with that specific setup. My workstation is
a home built system with a GeForce 9500 GT video card. One of the
features of Linux Mint is that their philosophy is "just make it work"
so they are not as dogmatic about closed source drivers as other
distros. Linux Mint uses the drivers from Nvidia and for my setup it
works pretty well. Again YMMV.
