{shrug} Not my call. People are funny about that. Some folks
used to spend an entire day trying to get a winmodem working properly
rather than just going down to the corner PC-clone shop and buying a
real modem.
The Adaptec controllers -- the real, full-featured AHA-2940 PCI and
preceding AHA-1542 series, not the low-end crud -- are one of several
sorts of components I never regretted acquiring, because they had
incredibly long useful service lives, and could be usefully migrated
from obsolete machines to their replacements. Also in that category:
3Com PCI, ISA, and PCMCIA ethernet adapters
Netgear ethernet adapters with DEC Tulip and compatible chips
Matrox video cards
You would not even think of buying one of those new in 2011, if they're
even produced any more, but the point was that money spent on them in
the day was well spent, because you got extremely satisfactory service
from them over many years.
