Subject: Migrating to Linux (sending up flares)
I'm trying to get away from Micro$oft's "State of the Arf" operating
system. For my needs, it looks like Suse is my best option (that way I
can tell people I'm using "commercial" software -- everyone has heard of
Novell). I have a DVD to install into my HP desktop (11.0, it came with
a magazine a couple of months ago).
Currently, I'm in Pacifica (I travel all over the place with my work),
and I hope to make it to the March 14 installfest. I won't know until
March 14 (if I'm lucky, maybe March 13) if I can actually get there.
I have Suse 11.0 loaded on a clean hard drive, but haven't figured out
how to get it to go online with my Millenicom airjack (a primary need).
All of my apps (mostly open source), data and Windoze are on the
legacy drive. As it is now, I have to swap drives back and forth.
Unfortunately, there are several apps which are Windoze-only, so I need
to be able to go back and forth between Linux and M$. Making it more
fun, I don't have the Windoze discs with me, and I think I need those to
set up dual-boot, which would mean I'm stuck swapping the plug, at least
until I can relegate my Win apps to a laptop.
I also need to be able to network Windoze machines with the Linux
system, at least until I find a Linux app to replace StreetAtlas (which
is another primary need).
Anyway, this is the head's up that I may be there on the 14th.
Keith

I'm unclear on what you are referring to, when you say "my Millenicom
airjack". Search for information on "airjack" mostly finds discussion
of http://sourceforge.net/projects/airjack/ , which is a set of tools
for discovering wireless network ESSIDs, cracking their security, and
manipulating wireless frames' contents.
Are you referring to a piece of hardware? You might be saying "airjack"
as a type of shorthand meaning "wireless network device". It's
difficult to say. You might, for example, mean one of these devices:
http://www.millenicom.com/mobilebroadband/franklincdu680.htm
If so, in order to determine where the difficulties might lie, we really
do need to know what hardware _specifically_ you have. Only you have
that information. So far. ;-> (Hint, hint.)
When you say "Suse 11.0", _probably_ you mean OpenSUSE 11.0 -- which, by
the way, is pretty obsolete, since it came out in June 2008, which means
it probably doesn't support some newer hardware.
There's an outside chance that you meant SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop
or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, both of which have 11.0 betas out --
but that's probably not what you meant.
Anyway, we have OpenSUSE 11.1 for both i686 (5 CDs) and x86_64 (1 DVD).
And yes, you're welcome to either use, or duplicate, those disks.

Dual-booting is indeed one way. Briefly, here are some others:
o Running winapps on Linux (WINE, CrossOver, Cedega).
o Running winapps in a virtual machine under Linux (VMware, others)
o Running winapps remotely over the network, while seeing and
controlling them from Linux (rdesktop, VNC, others).

Well, of course, Many people need to do this. You'll be using Samba
and related stuff.
http://linuxmafia.com/cabal/installfest/ has some further details.
Your courtesy in letting us know you might attend is appreciated, but,
FYI, RSVPing is not required. You're welcome to come and go as suits
you. We're not needing to go anywhere. ;->
