Ken, I think you downloaded and installed
install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz from adobe.com via Firefox's menus
rather than from your Linux distribution's repositories. That is how I
did it on my Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, too. Those Synaptic and aptitude
steps are not part of that procedure however, I think. Instead, those
are part of an alternative procedure whereby you could have installed
the flashplugin-nonfree package through your Linux distributions
package management system.

To avoid unexpected consequences, you may want to *undo* your
redundant steps with:

sudo aptitude remove flashplugin-nonfree

Use one installation method, not both.

In summary, I copy below the two methods posted by others earlier in
this thread.

Package manager method
================
[This didn't work for Ken and didn't work me either using Kubuntu's
Adept package manager. /Roger]
** This is not related to the Firefox menus method; use one method, not both **

Enable the multiverse repository. Synaptic package manager --> Settings
--> Repositories --> check: restricted nonfree (multiverse).

Then "sudo aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree" in the command line terminal.

Firefox menus method
=============
** This is not related to the package manager method; use one method,
not both **

In Firefox menu -->Tools --> Add-ons navigate to Extensions tab --> click the
"Get Extensions"link. In the side pane click Plugins --> Click Adobe
flash-player.

You have to use the tar.gz package for Ubuntu. Download it and save it
to the Desktop

In the command line terminal;

    $  cd Desktop

    $  gunzip install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

    $  tar -xvf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar

    $  cd install_flash_player_9_linux

    $  ./flashplayer-installer

Follow the screen instructions closing the Browser and typing y when needed.
(I didn't find any 'xpti.dat' file anywhere on my system.

After logging out and back on I am now able to watch youtube and google video!!

Cheers,
Roger
