[conspire] [more] sound under Debian 4.0r0 on IBM Thinkpad 600?

Gents, Ladies,

] Now that I've upgraded from 3.1r4 to 4.0r0 with "apt-get install dist-
] upgrade", and then, later, with a fresh install, sound is no longer
] working again, and, try as I might, I cannot get it to work.

Some clarification: I was using stable under 4.0r0, but have now
upgraded to testing, and the "best" of the bad sound behaviors I can
report is that when pointed to a VBR mp3 file, xmms starts up, and for a
fraction of a second the bitrate changes 4 or 5 times but the time
counter never advances past 00:00. Nor of course does any sound issue
from the speakers.

Thanks,
Eric

p.s. I'm downloading:

    debian-live-etch-i386-kde-desktop.iso 23-Apr-2007 16:37 595M etch-backports

from <http://live.debian.net/etch-builds/r0_1.0~a7-1/i386/> right now.
Normally I use KNOPPIX to solve these kinds of problems, but KNOPPIX
5.1.1 recognizes neither my PS/2 mouse nor trackpoint any more. Time to
send Klaus an email along with a dump of /etc and /var from 4.0.3 (under
which it they worked) and 5.1.1 so that he can fix this.

Would KNOPPIX 4.0.3 be similar enough to 4.0r0 for me to use that to
debug this?
