I plugged the DSL modem into the computer thereby taking the hub
out of the equation:
# ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:D0:B7:79:FF:A2
           inet addr:68.183.66.176  Bcast:68.183.66.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
           inet6 addr: fe80::2d0:b7ff:fe79:ffa2/64 Scope:Link
           UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
           RX packets:212005 errors:297 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:297
           TX packets:165444 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
           collisions:270 txqueuelen:1000
           RX bytes:215998291 (205.9 MiB)  TX bytes:20608803 (19.6 MiB)

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
           inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
           inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
           UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
           RX packets:1252 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:1252 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
           collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
           RX bytes:195871 (191.2 KiB)  TX bytes:195871 (191.2 KiB)

I still get errors and collisions.

At least the connection is not dropping off for now.
