Yes, you can do:
mpg123 http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3
I have a "Squeezebox" in my living room and it works great.
On my Linux and Mac laptops I use the java-based "softsqueeze",
but there's also text-based players around.

The server is a bit heavy -- but you can download a tarball with most
if not all the dependencies. Since my server is Debian I just use
their .deb:
deb http://debian.slimdevices.com unstable main
and apt-get slimserver.
