In case multiple sound devices are available, gnome-volume-control allows
one to select which one to control. This may include mixers that use ALSA
and/or OSS APIs. The one that was being controlled was the ALSA mixer for
the onboard sound in a VIA 8237 southbridge chip. Doesn't really have
anything to do with the alsamixer app.
