I might be missing your joke, here:  FWIW, I just went to an xterm on my
Xubuntu iBook and typed "abiword &" at the command prompt.  It seems to
work great, exactly as expected.

For that matter, typing "gnome-volume-control &" seems to work, too.
So, if there's some deep GNOME magic, I'm _really_ missing it.
