I believe so, Apple even uses it for OS X. Is the 870 a PrintGear 
printer and
reverts to plain Jane emulation of an HP Laserjet without NEC's old 
Windoze
95 or 98 driver?

Under the KDE desktop it appears to be the preferred solution.

Yes, it appears to be.

There are a number of solutions. I have had the best luck with
mplayer and Video Lan Client (vlc). Other players sometimes
work and sometimes don't, but mplayer and vlc seem to work
most often though the interfaces are not as pretty as some other
players.
