Files aimed at diagnosing a *very* slow drive.  A 40 GB Maxtor should be
relatively high performance.  Instead of 10, 20, or 40 MB/s out of it, I'm
seeing 80 - 140 KB/s.  Yeah, roughly a factor of a thousand or so slow.
