I wrote the article to dispel the false notion that Linux (or Jini, or the NC) is in a position to take over the market. I'm very familiar with Dan's articles; Dan is an acquaintance of mine and we argue via e-mail from time to time on this topic. I'm also very familiar with the ground-breaking stories by the LA Times and Brill's Content on Microsoft's marketing machine, particularly as it relates to the alleged attempt to influence journalists. No one at WagEd or Microsoft has tried to influence me in the slightest. My views are obviously all my own and I stand behind them. You apparently disagree. Do you feel Linux is in a position to take over the mainstream computer users? If so, I'd be interested in hearing why you think that's the case. I have some questions: - What happened to the original article? It's gone (http://www.techweb.com/se/directlink.cgi?WIN19981001S0001), and doesn't even turn up on a search of your name (http://www.techweb.com/se/techsearch.cgi?queryText=Mike+Elgan&sorted=true& collname=current&publication=All). Any reasons given? - Why'd you write it in the first place? Personal initiative or editorial request? - Have you been influenced directly or indirectly by Waggoner Edstrom. See Dan Gillmore's column if you're unfamiliar with the story: http://www.sjmercury.com/columnists/gillmor/docs/dg073198.htm - Do you have any response to my comments? I'd be quite interested in hearing them. Thanks. > Subject: Re: The Death of Windows > Date: Tue, 1 Sep 1998 13:12:34 -0400 > From: melgan@winmag.com > To: kmself@ix.netcom.com > > Can you elaborate?
