From: BLANTON@VAX2.DSEG.TI.COM Subject: Skeptic's bibliography Message-ID: <9212181426.AA17060@lll-winken.llnl.gov> Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1992 08:16:12 -0600 The following bibliography was compiled by John Thomas and James Rusk for the North Texas Skeptics. Free use may be made of this list to promote the understanding of the subjects referenced here, but no commercial use should be made without the consent of the authors. Printed copies of this list may be obtained from the NTS for free while supplies last. This file was produced by OCR conversion of a typeset work. To that extent, some character substitutions may be present, for which I apologize. Also, the printed document used italics and bold where appropriate. These were naturally discarded in the conversion to plain text. ======================================================================= Scientists Confront Pseudoscience A Bibliography for Librarians Distributed by: North Texas Skeptics P.O. (I don't know if my post recommending John Sladek's _The New Apocrypha_ was posted, but here's another recommendation(s).) Atack, John. _A Piece of Blue Sky_. Lyle Stuart, 1990. A history of Scientology, well-researched, though the writing style is pretty flat-- probably to avoid lawsuits, it basically reads as a litany of statements about the Church. Not as great a narrative as Humphrey Carpenter's _Bare-Faced Messiah_, or as lurid as Corydon and Hubbard's worthless _Messiah or Madman?_, it's probably the best starting-point for Scientology-watchers. Webb, James. _The Occult Establishment_ and _The Occult Underground_. Frequently, skeptics don't know a whole lot about the history of occult and esoteric movements in recent history-- and frequently, occult practitioners are all too eager to believe such mythologies as the all-powerful Illuminati or thereality of the _Necronomicon_. Webb's two volumes provide a good history of occult beliefs over the past couple of centuries, detailing how once 'hidden' knowledge eventually filtered into the lives of millions. Stang, Ivan. _high Weirdness by Mail_. Simon and Shuster, 1988. A catalogue of crank mail sources, with hilarious commentary for each address. --- Mapped by UUCP (Mail-Uf 1.8k) @ 8:914/201.0 216/221 19 Dec 92 00:26:10 From: UUCP of 914/201.0 To: Moen of 914/207.0 Subj: Re: Skeptic's bibliography Attr: private ------------------------------------------------ From: Taner Edis Subject: Re: Skeptic's bibliography Message-ID: <9212190536.AA02214@lll-winken.llnl.gov> Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1992 00:26:10 EST Let me add two books to the bibliography that are *not* skeptical, but I believe are worthwhile for skeptics: Patrick Grim, Ed., *Philosophy of Science and the Occult*, 2nd ed., SUNY Press, 1990. A "here are representatives of both sides" book that I know of that does a decent job (a few others I've seen were just plain insipid in trying to be "fair"). John Lash, *The Seekers Handbook: The Complete Guide To Spiritual Pathfinding*, Harmony Books, 1990. A rare find: a definitely New Age book that doesn't read like it was written by an incoherent Martian. Advocating the "high magic" aspect of the New Age. Includes sections addressing everything from Alchemy to Zen, and a great Lexicon of New Age concepts and terminology. I'd strongly recommend reading it along with the skeptical books. Pro-paranormal/occult books that are not a waste of time being rather difficult to find, I'd appreciate it if list members could post recommendations for material of this sort also. Taner Edis
