As with Ryan's script, you should always check domains via command-line reporting to stdout before relying on the e-mail reporting mode. Requires: Perl, whois, and either mutt or mailx. Also, always bear in mind that a TLD's (top-level domain's) whois format may change at any time without notice, which could break this script's parsing of that TLD's whois data. So, check the results interactively, periodically. GNU GPL v. 2 licensing terms. NOTE: At the Unix 32-bit epoch on 19 Jan 2038, the date routines will need a workover -- and, meanwhile, the script already breaks on expiration dates that date and later. NOTE2: Many TLDs (at this writing) either issue no meaningful expire date information via the regular port-43 whois service, or don't offer that service at all (though some offer partial or complete data via Web-based whois queries). This script relies on the traditional port-43 service. Rather than list the failure cases among the 250 current country-code TLDs and 20 generic TLDs, here are the ones that _do_ work: .aero, .biz, .cat, .com, .coop, .edu, .info, .jobs, .mobi, .museum, .name, .net, .org, .pro, .travel, .ag, .bg, .ca, .cc, .cd, .ci, .cn, .cx, .cz, .dk, .dm, .fi, .gi, .gs, .gy, .hk, .hn, .ie, .il, .in, .is, .it, .jp, .ke, .ki, .kp, .kr, .la, .lk, .nu, .nz, .ru, .sc, .se, .sg, .sk, .su, .tl, .tr, .tk, .tv, .tw, .uk, .us, and .vc. The most commonly encountered omissions (from the viewpoint of English speakers, at least) are .au, .de, .gov, and .mil, (the most notable TLDs that omit expiration information from port-43 whois output). NOTE3: Although it works OK with the regular whois client utility, the script by preference will use the smarter (and cache-oriented) jwhois client if present. Beware, however, of caching artifacts, e.g., reporting that a domain is still at or near expiration though it's been renewed within the cache retention period. Upstream source is http://okopnik.com/misc/Linux/domain-check (offline for maintenance a/o 2015-02) NOTE4: Upstream has now been vanished for many years (a/o 2018), and you should use Jesse Monroy's superior d-check from-scratch rewrite for all new implementations, NOT either of the domain-check implmentations. 1224 2007-07-02 22:07 d-check.cron Example cron script for running Jesse Monroy's Domain Check (d-check) 12027 061107 11:40 domain-check--RyanMatteson--deprecated Domain Expiration Check v. 1.5 by Ryan Matteson (matty91 at gmail dot com) is a Bourne shell script, runnable by cronjob, to check domain expiration dates and e-mail optional warnings at specified numbers of days before expiration. Full docs within. From: http://prefetch.net/code/domain-check Requires: awk, whois, date (whose full paths you must set in the script), and optionally /usr/bin/mail for e-mail alarms (set $MAIL in script body). IMPORTANT: Check domains in the default stdout mode before setting up e-mail reporting, because domains whose whois data the script can't parse are reported as "Unknown" to stdout but as _null_ to e-mail. At present, the most significant problem case is .org domains, whose whois data the script can't yet handle. There's some hope that Ryan or others may soon fix this problem somewhat, so look out for updates! Also, always bear in mind that a TLD's whois format may change at any time without notice, which could break this script's parsing of that TLD's (top- level domain's) whois data. So, check the results interactively, periodically. NOTE: This script cannot even potentially work on domains in the .au, .name, and .mil TLDs, which lack expire data in the port-43 whois return values. There are also many other domains that either lack expire data on public display entirely, or have it only in Web-based whois, or have no whois data at all. GNU GPL v. 2 licensing terms.
