From jlawless at redwoodscientific.com Wed Sep 1 15:00:59 2004 From: jlawless at redwoodscientific.com (John Lawless) Date: Sat Apr 2 14:56:57 2005 Subject: [web-team] svlug mailing list archives vs spam Message-ID: <20040901220059.GA19317@redwoodscientific.com> While trying to figure out why some of my email addresses get so much more spam than others, I found that lists.svlug.org has e-mail addresses for mailing list users unobscured on the web site such as in this html fragment:

[svlug] Disk Partitioning again

John Lawless jlawless@redwoodscientific.com
May I suggest some changes? First, it seems to me that "href=mailto:" tags are unnecessary. It is an obvious invitation to spammers. If any human wants to e-mail me, they can cut and paste the address. (I know that "%40" for "@" used to fool spammer's robots but spammers do get smarter as time goes on.) Secondly, the plain text part should have some obscuration added. I would suggest, for example, adding random spaces into the address. Any human capable of using Linux would immediately remove spaces but the spaces would likely leave robots hopelessly confused. This e-mail address does get a lot more spam than my others. I and, I'm sure, many other svlug mailing list users would greatly appreciate your help on this. When you let the abusers of a medium shape your use of the > medium, you lose. Don, I have a standard paragraph that I use on the Mailman list-info pages for my mailing lists: Per list policy, our (subscriber-accessible) membership roster and public message archives display unobscured posting addresses. If you're trying to hide your e-mail address from spammers, avoid this list. (See, for example, http://linuxmafia.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/conspire .) If you'd like, I can add that text to any or all of the following: http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/svlug-announce http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/svlug http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/web-team http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/speakers/ Please let me know where (if at all) you consider that appropriate. The non-SVLUG page at http://lists.svlug.org/lists/listinfo/smaug already has that notice -- because I've long admined the list. ;-> P.S.: Policy about roster access is actually diverse among SVLUG's lists. Of the three above, we have: List Policy svlug-announce: Roster visible to anyone, even non-subscribers. svlug: Roster visible to listadmin only. web-team: Roster visible to subscribers. speakers: Roster visible to subscribers. I will assume the differences are deliberate, and not do anything to them. Ones I don't administer: jobs: Roster visible to listadmin only. lsec: Roster visible to listadmin only. When you arrive, check with the Installfest personnel (not the bookshop employees - we do not want to interfere with their work) on where to set up your system. We try to keep people with new installations together, and people with troubleshooting issues together. Then go to work - our gurus will be there to help. Feel free to ask any question. There is no fixed schedule of acivities, though occasionally we will have an expert come give a mini-seminar on his or her area of expertise. Due to the finite size of the work area, we ask that you be prepared to share tables with other installers. What To Do Bring your machine, including monitor and anything else it needs to work. Bring a power strip. If we have a shortage of outlets, people who bring power strips get priority at the wall outlets. Whether you are doing a new Linux install or just an upgrade, make a backup of your current system before you come. If something goes wrong, we want to be sure that you lose nothing critical. If you are installing a new version of Linux, bring your installation CD and documentation. (Some Intel-based installation CDs may be there for you to use, but don't depend absolutely on it.) We try to have a 10baseT local-area network hooked up among our machines, so bring your NICs! If you have one, bring an Ethernet hub. Since attendance is somewhat unpredictable, it doesn't hurt to have several extras. (Be sure to ask before connecting it - we want a topology where one hub is just for other hubs to connect to, and ideally only one-hub-deep connections from there. Some distant parts of the room may need an extra hub for that area.) Some regular participants have found it handy to make a box of stuff they regularly bring to the Installfests. What Not To Do Don't count on others to have spare monitors, power cables, keyboards, mice, non-Intel Linux distributions, etc... although if you intended to bring them and forgot, ask around before driving back home to get them. Our hours of operation are 11am to 4pm. Don't arrive at 3:00 and expect to get much accomplished before we have to shut down for the day. The group was originally formed in 1988 as the PC-Unix Special Interest Group of the Silicon Valley Computer Society. SVLUG celebrated its 10th anniversary at the March 4, 1998 meeting, where Linus Torvalds addressed an audience of 500 people. This event repeats on the third Saturday every month forever. Don and Marc -- Whether to correspond with these guys to "confirm events" is logically your call, as a policy question. Default is "no". They claim to have run this Web calendar, originally serving just Chicago, for six years as a mostly-free-as-in-beer service with business extensions including online advertising, and that seems correct. Silicon Valley portion of their calendar is at http://techvenue.com/cgi-bin/TechVenue.pl?CalendarName=USValley . You'll notice that listings overwhelmingly consist of clue-starved businessman-leaning social events. I don't expect that to change. There is some annoying use of Javascript: It's evident that they're fixated on MSIE. We could do any of the following: 1. Ignore them, in expectation that they'll eventually flush their listings of the monthly SVLUG general meetings and installfests. (They currently list both.) 2. Ask them specifically to delete those meetings. 3. Start playing their "verification" game. Only probable immediate drawback is (likely) periodic nagmails. Your call. Default is "no". It looks like a legit service. I went ahead and replied by email with a copy of the same event listing. If they make us jump through too many hoops to do it it's not worth it, but if we can keep the listing up to date by sending it to events@techvenue.com we might as well. -- Don Marti Plain text email only, please. Is this by design? On a good day, we have been known to have design, but this sounds like accident. ;-> Some months ago, I did notice that you had to dig a _little_ bit (definitely not a lot) to get that datum. On the Web site's front page, you see "Accent Techologies, San Jose" and a link attached to the word "Installfests". Following that takes you to the central installfest page, which, right under the upcoming dates, says The Regular Place Our installfest host site is normally Accent Technologies in San Jose. We have detailed directions to help you get there. It's very close to the San Jose Fry's Electronics. The phrase "detailed directions" is a link to a page with the street address and painfully detailed information on how to get there. I'm actually undecided about whether all this is a problem or not. I could re-edit the central installfest page to say The Regular Place Our installfest host site is normally Accent Technologies, 1880 Hartog Drive, San Jose. We have detailed directions to help you get there. It's very close to the San Jose Fry's Electronics. But I'm not sure that helps people, because, let's face it, Hartog Drive isn't exactly El Camino Real. The only use of that datum would be feeding it into a map -- but that's already provided on the directions page. So, looks to me like a pretty good design, whether accidental or not. Tell you what: We try not to bog down the Web site front page with gobs of information, but I see a way to fix the situation there: I've just added a "(directions)" hyperlink right next to the installfest news squib on the front page. Better?
