I asked for this information on Thursday and would have happily updated the website Thursday. I did not get the information I was looking for until Sam's announcement today. I want it to be very clear that the website was updated within a few hours of my receiving the right info. I do not want to hear any of you bitching that the site had the wrong info. I asked for it as soon as I was aware that there was a problem. Furthermore, since there seemed to be disagreement about what *was* the correct info, I asked for clarification before posting more misinformation. I'm not blaming anyone in particular here or saying anyone is bad. I'm just absolving myself of blame and pointing out a problem with responsiveness. We all have busy lives, myself included. You can get the office rentals and wage rates of your town, here for a currency differential ( NZ$1.00= US$0.46C) for about half what it is costing you now. In other words without making "one" person redundant you can out maneuver the opposition. A house in the best part of town will cost you less than US$200,000, you can be at your holiday home at the lakes or ski fields within two hours on a friday.(incidentally we all go home for lunch) Have a look at the web sire in my signature file. You mentioned that it would be better if i came up with suggestions on things i would be interested in working on for SVLUG. At first i though of adding discussion to the SVLUG web site, using phpforum. Then, i realized what i really wanted to do is create a special interest group for my special interest: intrusion detection and recovery. I recently wrote an article on open source intrusion detection tools, and hope to have it published in Linux Journal. They have assigned me an article number and asked me for a photo and bio, but i have yet to see anything about it in print. What i would like to do is to create a SIG dedicated to Intrusion detection and recovery, a volunteer service aimed at non-profit Linux based community servers, in the event they do have an intrusion. I have worked with the Philippines Computer Emergency Response Team (PH-CERT) and have tried to form Incident Response Teams (IRTs) in the past. I am hoping with SVLUG's membership and the awareness that is already out-there i will have better success this time. Let me know what you think. I just went through the whole process and it's pretty straightforward if one reads the directions: Page 1: Click on a list name to get more information about the list, or to subscribe, unsubscribe, and change the preferences on your subscription. Clicking on the "svlug" link yields a page (2) that says: To change your subscription (set options like digest and delivery modes, get a reminder of your password, or unsubscribe from svlug), enter your subscription email address I did so, and saw (3): To unsubscribe, enter your password and hit the button. (If you've lost your password, see just below to have it emailed to you.) Looking below shows: Click this button to have your password emailed to your list delivery address. If you do this, it emails your password. You can then go back to page 3 and enter the password and unsubscribe. Admittedly this is a bit awkward, but it's not like people should be UNsubscribing more than once. Yeah, there's probably a way to set this up to make it easier, but this works... What I recommend is that you send a proposal about your group to the main list, and we can let you do an announcement at the next meeting. Then, you should probably talk to the people who showed interest and decide whether you'd just like a mailing list or you'd also like to meet, in which case you guys can come up with a meeting location and a date. We can host a mailing list for you if you wish (like idr@svlug.org or something like that) Marc -- Microsoft is to software what McDonalds is to gourmet cooking Home page: http://marc.merlins.org/ (friendly to non IE browsers) Finger marc_f@merlins.org for PGP key and other contact information From dan at kionka.org Sun Aug 27 12:07:16 2000 From: dan at kionka.org (Daniel P. We have 2 members who were hacked into 2 or 3 years ago: Alvin Oga and Bill Selmeier. They have experience in this and may be interested in helping. Too many people are asking who to do this and we need a web page to point them to. Ideally the email lists menu bar thingy should point to your info page and that page should have a link to mailman > Page 1: > > Click on a list name to get more information > about the list, or to subscribe, unsubscribe, and change > the preferences on your subscription. > > Clicking on the "svlug" link yields a page (2) that says: > > To change your subscription (set options like digest and > delivery modes, get a reminder of your password, or > unsubscribe from svlug), enter your subscription email > address > > I did so, and saw (3): > > To unsubscribe, enter your password and hit the button. > (If you've lost your password, see just below to have it > emailed to you.) > > Looking below shows: > > Click this button to have your password emailed to your > list delivery address. > > If you do this, it emails your password. One of the categories on the site (there are 250) lists magazine articles on Linux: http://MagPortal.com/c/comp/linux/ There you will find links to recent (usually listed within 1 business day of the publisher putting them on the web) articles which are freely available on the web. The site collects links to articles about Linux from dedicated Linux publications such as Linux Journal and Linux World as well as more general magazines like Smart Computing all in one place so that your users can find all relevant articles quickly.
