I just wanted to tell you about a recent success helping a private
client. She was not able to start her laptop in Windows at all (blue
screen error) so I had to do a repair install, scan HD for errors,., scan
for viruses & spyware ,etc. Since I couldn't boot into windows I had no
way to back up her files, BUT, with the help of my trusty Ubuntu Live CD I
was able to boot up into Linux and backup everything to an external HD.

Her computer then worked fine for one day but after that the HD completely
gave out and started making grinding noises. Fortunately due to the
backup I had just done, all her data was safe.

She wasn't sure whether to go ahead and replace the HD or shop for a new
computer, so I suggested that in the meantime she could run the computer
under Linux. I just gave her the Ubuntu Live CD and explained how to start
up from it. (basically, just turn on your computer and wait.) Luckily
her wireless card worked "out of the box" under Ubuntu. So now she is
using Ubuntu, an OS she had never heard of before, to go online and access
her email, with no hard drive installed at all!
