Hi LUGers,
Well I nearly forgot about it while reading the Sunday Paper but
finally
at 11:05 AM I got to the Dell E7450 and began to participate.
Before I start let me say that any attendee of the meeting should
feel free to offer clarifications and correct my misunderstanding of
the proceedings.
On hand for most of the meeting we got to see the visages of our
friends and attempted to exchange tid-bits of information.
Alex Klieder showed up.
Anonymous was right there keeping quiet through the
meeting.
Ken S.,
John S.
Alex A. ??
Michael P.
Rick M.
Tom
and Akkana P.
After various exchanges of views regarding Microsoft and Linux.
I advised John that he should try out the MX-Linux advanced hardware
support I know that he started to download it and intended to get it on
a Flash Drive but whether or not he followed up on that I dunno.
He had to leave a bit early to pursue other activities.
Alex K brought up his problem with his newish Asus laptop which he
is having a good deal of trouble getting setup.
We, including Rick, myself and Ken advised him to turn off the
fast-boot
feature of the Windows currently installed there. I shut off my microphone
then so that he was able to pay attention to fewer voices. Then he was able
to get to the Debian start-up. It was sort of a mess. It might
have been
better if he had presented his problem on the list.
Michael P. was busy with doing updates to the various sites he services
on behalf of Linux Users Groups on both sides of the Bay, but I think he
also advised John about this.
Akkana gave him some advice as well.
Rick M. informed us of the importance of voting. I totally agree
with Rick on the importance of voting as early as possible and to
be certain of the ballot getting to the office concerned with
elections hand deliver it. Keep down the load on the Post Office.
At 1 PM I left the group to pursue my need for lunch.
Next Meeting will be on November 1 at the usual time with a bit
of leeway on the time as usual from 11 AM to 1 PM but it will be
Pacific Standard Time as that is the date of change from Daylight Saving
Time. So if some person thinking of the higher truths forgets to turn
back their clock we will be there.
Also later this month we expect final release of Ubuntu 20.10 as
the Beta is at the Distrowatch along with Fedora 33 beta. This will
include all the various distribution which are based on Ubuntu and its
repositories
Fedora is switching to the Btrfs across the whole line of Workstation
and all the flavors. It may be out by the end of October but if the
Beta testers have problems it might be delayed as Fedora will
announce no version before they have fixed the discovered problems.
SystemRescueCD has been updated.
If you need a less-focused recovery system you might do worse than
Puppy Linux 9.5 <https://distrowatch.com/11018>. It now uses Ubuntu
repositories but does not include the
systemd mistake. And it will mount every partition it can find. So that
should help if you forgot to do your backups and need to recover those
files.
This is a very compact distribution and will fit on a CD at only 409 MB.
4MLinux has released a recent update and while it is described as
a compact release it is more than twice the size of Puppy.
You will need a Flash Drive or DVD to get this to a bootable state.
Have a Happy Halloween, Stay Safe and continue Covid-19 precautions.
