Hi LUGers,

1035 arrived and started to setup but usual large table occupied by
young
men  working at their computers.
Took the row of tables behind that table eventually using even the
round
table at the Western end with 4 of the square tables.
No other problems with the setup.
Alex K. was there and seemed interested in the magazines for a
while but
after the lady with the job came in he moved away from that point.  He
spent a
lot of time discussing languages with Jim S.
Jim has since put up the referral for the Job Offer on the list but
I believe
that job offer led to the discussion of languages.

Next in was John S.  who still has some monitors and desktop
computers that
may need keyboards and hard drives.  Most are having older Dual Core
processors.

John tried out several distributions on his still for sale $150  Dell
Latitude E6420.  He was able to get online with all but the recent Kali
2020.1
which features a very dark theme but which with my new spectacles I was
able to spot the minuscule icon for the Network and got it right on line.
Although it features Chrome, the WebBrowser for the distribution is Firefox
ESR. Kali 2020.1 also is able to boot and shut down with remarkable speed.

Ken and Sunni S, were the next in and Ken helped show off his Intel
Stick
computer though it seems he had some problems with the setup this time.

Jim Stockford showed up well by 1115 or so.  As I pointed out he spent
a lot of time in discussion with Ken and with Alex.

Maestro honored us with his presence and was assisted with a problem
by Ken who showed off his new portable vacuum cleaner running from the
small
power pack used to recharge phones.

Additions to the distribution library and how they performed
on trying them out.

PCLinuxOS64 2020.01 releases in Usual flavors.
KDE Plasma5, in plain, Darkstar and Magnum*, Mate*, XFCE
in regular and mini! (Last months Mega has advanced to Magnum.)
No problems with the PCLinuxOS64 2020.01  Installation can be
done from these Live distributions.

     linux-lite-4.8-64bit.iso*
Works fine but tend to show all the partitions on my
hard disk.  Makes for a very messy background.  Otherwise
looks typical for Linux intended for new users.

     CentOS-8.1.1911-x86_64-dvd1.iso this is 7 GB!*
Sadly this is an install only distribution.
     CentOS-8.1.1911-x86_64-boot.iso <1 GB.

      I have a new so-called power rescue/security distribution
called Kaisen Linux so downloaded a beta. Checksums come with
the next version I am informed by the developer so no guarantees
on this.  But he sent me some checksums and I was able to
verify my download of kaisenlinux20191229-amd64.iso.
Unfortunately the Kaisen seems to be presently in French
only and my fluency is inadequate to evaluate Kaisen except
to say this Beta ran on my Dell.

Kali 2020.1 I have mentioned above and apart from the very dark
background
theme I have no problems with it.  It has it usual range of tools.

About 1245 we began to pack up and left as we got ready to do so.
Jim Stockford was kind enough to give me a ride back to my place
downtown.

The next meeting will be on March 1, 2020.

Enjoy all the holidays this month and especially St. Valentine's Day.

Don't forget to vote on March 3, 2020

Anyone attending the meeting is free to correct my omissions or
incomprehension of the activities and asked to do so asap so that the
membership not in attendance will not be mis-informed any longer
than necessary.

Hope to see some of us at least next month.

     Bobbie Sellers
