That mystery remains...
...but the good news is that your advice did work and isn't what I would 
have ever thought of doing myself:
That is going back and redoing the network configuration a second time 
during installation _after_ (using another terminal) mounting the usb 
stick with the firmware and in this way providing the installer with the 
firm ware and letting it configure networking a second time.
The wifi configuration has this time survived the reboot into the new 
system (currently being used to generate this message.)
