I did that on my laptop (Ubuntu 14.4) and found 2362 items listed!!
I'd be interested what others get on their machines.
I'm quite sure I do not need/want all this stuff but am afraid of what
might break if I start un-installing things.

Since
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev            2.0G  4.0K  2.0G   1% /dev
tmpfs           394M  1.2M  393M   1% /run
/dev/sda1       226G   40G  175G  19% /
none            4.0K     0  4.0K   0% /sys/fs/cgroup
none            5.0M     0  5.0M   0% /run/lock
none            2.0G  236K  2.0G   1% /run/shm
none            100M   36K  100M   1% /run/user
suggests there's no crisis regarding HD space, I'm guessing better leave
well enough alone.
