You know, I picked up my most recent laptop purchase (a 2011 MacBook Air
w/13" screen, bought because my wife worked at Apple and we got an
incredible price) only after a great deal of pondering whether I'd be
happy with that small a screen -- and it turned out that, for me, the
answer was yes. LASIK helps. ;-> So does Apple's high-res Retina
display standard or equivalent from various other companies. (Marketing
is all very well, but lots of laptop builders have excellent panels.)
Anyway, what I'm driving at is: Give quality 13" or 14" screens a try
before assuming you wouldn't like them. It seems likely that your
desired target of 2.6-3.0 lb is achievable only with a laptop case of
that size.

Just to be really clear, I haven't tried a single one of those, only
read good things about them. I share your liking for ThinkPads,
generally.
