I recently started using Roundcube.  (Switched from Squirrelmail.) 
Seems pretty solid so far, more modern and feature-filled than SM, and 
has a good assortment of useful plugins.  Hard to say much beyond that, 
since I haven't been using it for that long.  But feel free to email 
specific questions off-list and I'll be happy to respond.
